Growing together: Reopening Colleen’s Sanctuary and expanding our impact
When we learned about an opportunity to continue and strengthen domestic violence and sexual assualt services serving both Carbon and Emery Counties in Utah, we recognized what it meant for survivors in those communities. Access to safe, supportive spaces during moments of crisis is essential, and can be especially limited in rural areas. Sexual assault advocacy in these communities has historically been supported by trusted partner organizations, including The Refuge in Utah County and Seekhaven in Moab.
By expanding our role at Colleen’s Sanctuary and working alongside these partners, we didn’t just preserve services — we also broadened access to coordinated support for survivors across the region. This growth allowed us to double the number of counties we now serve across the state. With that expansion came greater responsibility, deeper partnerships, and a renewed commitment to ensuring survivors in rural and underserved areas have access to safety, advocacy, and hope.
Listening first

Before reopening, we wanted to hear directly from the community. We hosted a listening session attended by more than 25 community members — including partners, advocates, and local leaders — who shared their insights, concerns, and hopes for the future of services in the area.
Those conversations shaped our approach. We are committed not only to operating our sanctuary but also to being an active and collaborative partner in the community.
A fresh start
When we stepped into the home, we immediately saw the opportunity to create a space that communicates safety, comfort, and hope. Our team worked hard to refresh and re-energize the sanctuary. We painted the walls, updated furniture, and created a welcoming, bright environment where survivors and their children can begin to heal.

Safe space matters. A thoughtfully prepared environment sends a powerful message: you are valued, we believe you, and you deserve comfort and dignity.
Celebrating together

Reopening the shelter was a moment worth celebrating. We were honored to host a ribbon-cutting ceremony with community members and partners. Thank you to the Carbon County Chamber of Commerce for hosting and helping us celebrate this important milestone. Thank you to the local media for covering our special day! Support signals to survivors that this community stands with them.
