Board of Directors
The Board of Directors is South Valley Service’s governing body. They are responsible for establishing agency policies and overseeing the activities of South Valley Services and our Executive Director. They meet monthly and are actively involved in the operations of the shelter.

Ty Barnes
Board Chair
With over 18 years of experience in audit and risk management, Ty brings a wealth of expertise to the board. He spent seven years in public accounting with Ernst & Young and served as the Director of Internal Audit at Extra Space Storage. Currently, he holds the position of Global Director of Audit & Risk Services at Boart Longyear, a leading provider of drilling services. Ty is a Certified Public Accountant (CPA) and a Certified Fraud Examiner (CFE). He earned a B.S. from Brigham Young University and a Master of Science in Accountancy from the University of Notre Dame.

Nicholas Nash
Chair Elect
Nicholas holds multiple undergraduate degrees from the University of Utah and a Juris Doctor from Vanderbilt University. His professional expertise includes counseling organizations on equity investments, mergers and acquisitions, securities matters, governance, and compliance. He currently serves as Company Secretary & Global Corporate and Governance Counsel at Boart Longyear. Nicholas is also dedicated to community service, providing pro bono support to various organizations. In his personal life, he values spending time with his family and outdoor activities.

Michael Harris
Treasurer
A native of Utah, Michael is a Certified Public Accountant (CPA) with a Master's degree in Accounting from the University of Utah. He currently holds the position of Chief Financial Officer at GPS Capital Markets. Michael's career at GPS has seen him in various leadership roles across departments such as Accounting, Operations, Finance, Credit, Business Intelligence, and HR. Beyond work, he enjoys family life and is an enthusiastic reader.

Joanne Miller
Secretary
A graduate of Western Australia’s Edith Cowan University (ECU) Radio and Television Broadcasting degree, with over 30 years of copywriting and editing experience, Joanne has worked with private and government sectors, including mineral exploration and engineering, corporate and residential real estate, lifestyle publishing, education, recruitment, and retail. A native Aussie with a love of travel – she has lived and worked in Singapore, the Philippines, remote Australia, and various states within the US. Joanne is a self-confessed animal lover, foodie, a keen ‘shutterbug’ (amateur photographer), and is passionate about mental health and well-being.

Andrew Cuthbert
Board Member
Andrew earned a bachelor’s degree in communications from BYU and later earned his MBA from CCU, he has since earned professional certification from Henley Business School in the United Kingdom. Andrew has accumulated more than 25 years of professional experience in corporate communications, content marketing, branding, advertising, and event management. Currently, he serves as the senior manager of alumni communications at Brigham Young University’s Marriott School of Business. Prior to this, he directed marketing and communication teams at international companies like FLSmidth and Boart Longyear. In Andrew's free time, he enjoys traveling with his wife, Nicole, and four children.

Jessica Berdaguer
BOARD MEMBER
Jessica brings 17 years of HR experience across various industries, including aviation fueling, warehouse, beverage production, non-profit, zoological, and insurance. She is close to completing her Bachelor’s degree in Human Resources Management from Western Governors University and holds PHR and SHRM-CP certifications. Outside of her professional life, Jessica enjoys cooking, kayaking, watercolor painting, photography, and sharing her experiences, including a trip to Kenya and visits to wild horse herds, with her family.

Ruth Weniger
BOARD MEMBER
Ruth Weniger, President of Powered By Strategy LLC, provides business development consulting, strategic planning, and executive coaching to businesses and individuals across diverse business sectors. Her focus is on helping high-performance clients achieve business excellence while maintaining their personal balance and perspective. Ruth is committed to helping South Valley Services grow in its ability to serve clients and the community. She has served on other domestic violence boards as well as organizations serving music education and early childhood education.
